Ep. 50 Why Roddy Piper Was Too Rowdy in *They Live*
Bob analyzes John Carpenter’s 1988 cult classic, “They Live,” starring Roddy Piper. After making some general observations about the major thematic elements, Bob critiques the main character’s strategy for dealing with an alien takeover of the media and government.

I think back when the movie was made the USA was more culturally conservative and the marriage custom was accepted by the “establishment” as a tool they could use to manage the population. After all, why do you need a “license” to marry someone … other than for the purpose of jamming government supervision into an otherwise natural process?
However, times have changed, the USA has swung more towards socialism than most people appreciate and they are treating the population more like cattle these days. They are controlling the reproductive process by use of abortion clinics, and making it difficult to obtain housing, raising the price of many common items like electricity, transport, etc. The idea of breaking down families is more in vogue right now.
It hasn’t been a sharp transition though, inheritance tax has been working in the background to slowly eliminate family farms, and long-lived family businesses. Not directly breaking up families, but disempowering families in preparation.
Of course it’s a cartoon perspective on how society works, but yeah it gives people a perspective to recognize some aspects of what is going on.
That was one of the most paranoid podcasts I have ever listened to. Loved it !
I like your take that are rulers are not incompetent.
I don’t think I disagree in that they don’t like their slave to reproduce because they like population control.
In several countries you get so much money from the state for producing kids, that alcoholics have kids, just to be able to buy booze. I think they follow the model:
If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving regulate it. If it stops moving subsidise it.
If it reproduces, tax it, if the population shrinks, start subsidising it again.
Just always intervene.
Also, if opening people’s eyes does not help, than doing it gradually, like you propose, also wont help, wouldn’t it?
That was some episode! Please make more of these, I had so much fun listening. Cracked up at the “alien Mises” line.
Oh, and BTW now that I think about it, that whole “they’d want people to sit in front of their TV and play video games all day” doesn’t really stand up to the facts. Like, sure, I get why that will make total sense: it doesn’t make you think, it has childish aspects to it, it is unsocial relative to other past time activities. But while video games culture is a much larger part of our world today than was, say, 10 years ago, the establishment (lizard people) aren’t really fond of it. If anything, they hate it. So on this point, the theory doesn’t hold. But other than that, sure, the gov is controlled by aliens. This is common knowledge.
The establisent used to love the idea. Then the gamer culture turned hardcore establishment sceptics, so they had to be undermined with endless SJW attacks.

Re: “Marry And Reproduce”
People with children are MUCH easier to control.
My takeaway from this episode is that somebody needs to make They Live 2 about the aliens now openly ruling and oppressing humanity.
(actually thats basically Half-Life 2)
In this episode Bob goes full Alex jones (before he sold out to trump inc.). Love it!
