Where’s your beard, Bob?
Great talk Bob!
Very interesting part about conscription. Recently I saw the movie Free State of Jones. Have you seen it? It would be great to hear you and Tom Woods talk about this. Not about the causes of the war, but the execution of it in regards to conscription and desertion. Considering somebody who is conscripted to fight for the South and initially does their ‘duty’, but then learns that their 13 year old son is conscripted and sent to the front line, and discovers that their farm was raided to support the war and their wife is probably starving; and meanwhile hears that rich plantation (and slave) owners are exempted from duty… You wouldn’t be sure if the tyrants you are fighting for are any better than the ones you are fighting against.
Wait . . . You won the debate and shaved your beard anyway?
Oh, and what an insightful talk on private defense. I learned a lot and will be sharing with friends.
I’m going to side with history on this one. There’s been a lot of famous battles, studied in detail, documented, even some of them re-enacted regularly. You won’t see too many cases where the battle outcome was decided by price signals and the soldiers negotiated market driven outcomes.
I’m not saying it cannot possibly happen … but humans have been whacking other humans for a very, very long time … and it hasn’t happened yet.
